After being much less than pleased with berlin (edit 2021: i like berlin now!), i had low expectancies for munich.
There has been no reason for it.
I simplest knew a few matters about the city: oktoberfest is there, hitler had his beer hall putsch there, and it has a well-known (and overvalued) clock.
Anybody has heard of munich, however i virtually knew nothing about it.
But i hadn’t been thrilled with germany thus far and figured munich is probably another sadness.
I cherished munich. Munich became what berlin wasn’t. It became beautiful, had a metropolis middle, large green parks, delicious meals, and friendlier humans.
I spent 4 days in munich, and i will see why such a lot of human beings love the metropolis even if oktoberfest isn’t there. I don’t doubt i’d enjoy a hundred,000 under the influence of alcohol people in tents, however all that ingesting might do away with from the beauty munich has to offer.
Munich became my time to decompress after many overdue nights in berlin. A overdue reserving placed me in a hostel that still doubled as a motel for large corporations of prepubescent teenagers. Large agencies of scottish kids roamed round and were eventually accompanied by means of big agencies of spanish kids. (i don’t genuinely like children, so it was a piece demanding trying to do paintings with kids screaming all round me.)
Thankfully, across the street was a beer corridor. The hotel group of workers wrote down a few bavarian dishes for me to strive, and that i ventured throughout to peer what a bavarian beer hall absolutely seems like. Permit me inform you—it’s nuts! Long tables of humans squeezed collectively with big steins of beer and ridiculously coronary heart-clogging food.
Squeezing in among a few human beings, i dug into a honestly correct beer and some dishes that were sure to percent at the pounds. Their names escape me right now, however they were truly scrumptious. I was pleasantly amazed through bavarian food.
MUNICH IS BETTER THAN BERLIN
Munich has a lot of splendor in it, and roaming around the town become a pleasant exchange from the industrial berlin. In the future, at the way to the bavarian records museum, i unknowingly walked past the english gardens (very beautiful). One of the best matters approximately wandering around is which you in no way recognise what you’ll see. Within the gardens, i stumbled throughout some surfers.
Now, seemingly those men are quite well known, however i had no idea they existed. It turned into an first-rate component to look—a bunch of surfers using the waves of a river because it barreled out from under a bridge. Snow had simply fallen within the mountains, melting into the town and making this river pretty the sight to peer. My iphone got here in on hand, and i was capable of get this video:
I’m glad i noticed them because the bavarian museum became a complete waste of time. Happily, on sunday, it’s simplest one euro to enter, so i don’t feel too cheated. There was no story or something—only a bunch of old relics and artifacts. And while the suits of armor have been barely exciting, for me museums are approximately gaining knowledge of a place’s story and here there was none. I was out in 15 minutes.
I an awful lot favored the house. That is the antique palace for bavarian princes where you also get to look the crown jewels. Not as lavish as versailles, the palace could be very german in that it’s austere, practical, and easy.
The maximum thrilling part of my visit changed into the rock live performance. In the beginning, i was going to couchsurf, but it didn’t work out. However, the host and i did meet for a night out in town. She, her friends, and that i went to a massive multi-artist concert on saturday night time.
I had no concept what the bands have been announcing (i don’t talk german), but the vibe became brilliant, and attempting to talk broken english with the locals become quite fun. As become learning terrible german phrases.
Munich became an interesting place to visit. It lacks the industrial, arty experience berlin has, it’s a piece cozier, the parks are prettier, and the bavarian beer hall surroundings is lots of fun.
Furthermore, the meals, even as hearty, is scrumptious. Munich is a massive stop on the backpacker path, however even if you’re no longer on that, take the time out to see munich.
