Locals call for sacrifice after tourist climbs Chichen Itza.
An angry mob attacked a tourist who climbed the steps of the Castillo de Kukulcán, one of the new seven wonders of the modern world located in the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá, in south-eastern Mexico.
In a video posted online, the female tourist can be seen even doing a little dance on top of the site as people whistle and shout at her.
As security usher her down, she is greeted by a large, unimpressed crowd who shout for her to be imprisoned.
Cries of “jail, jail, jail”, “lock her up” and “sacrifice, sacrifice”, can be heard in the video, before the enraged crowd begin throwing rubbish and water at the unidentified woman.
In another video, an older lady can be seen pulling the woman’s hair as she is led away by a security guard.
“This is so disrespectful… don’t mess with my Mexican people,” Angela Lopeze posted on TikTok.
El Castillo (The Castle), also known as the Kukulcan Pyramid, is 30 metres high and has 365 steps to symbolise the number of days in a year. Built by the pre-Columbian Maya civilisation sometime between 8th and 12th centuries AD, the ancient structure is regarded as one of the most remarkable in the world.
